Meet Casey Farmer and Read Why She Supports Jody London

Vote for Jody London on Nov. 8 in the Oakland school board District 1 race

My name is Casey Farmer, and I am voting for Jody London for Oakland School Board in District 1 on November 8, 2016. Jody cares deeply about education in this city. She is a passionate parent leader and dedicated school board member.

I’ve had the opportunity to get to know Jody over the years through community meetings and as my neighbor. I have seen firsthand how committed she is to her role on the School Board and how passionate she is about addressing the great needs of our District.

I am a former Oakland high school teacher, I know how important internships, college and career pathways, and engaging curriculum is for our teenaged students. Jody co-led the successful Measure N bond campaign, which brought these programs to all our Oakland high schools.

As a former teacher, I understand the realities of low teacher salaries and high cost of living. Director London recognizes these realities and helped secure a 14 percent raise for Oakland teachers. When city of Oakland property recently became available, Jody advocated for it to be developed into teacher housing.

I am continually impressed with the leadership Director London brings to the school board as a thoughtful and deliberate decision maker. She worked hard to appoint a strong Superintendent and responsibly manages a $600 million budget. Director London has led efforts to make schools more energy efficient, which saves resources and increases our investment in student learning.

Director London also recognizes student needs outside the classroom. For example, she understands it is important students are well nourished to do their best learning. Recognizing a lack of healthy food options in Oakland schools, Director London championed OUSD’s Central Kitchen, a unique and innovative hub that connects nutrition, education, and community programs.

Every year, Jody, her family and hundreds of community members ride their bicycles to Sacramento for “Ride for a Reason,” which is an awareness campaign about the need for more money in public education. She walks the walk and “cycles the cycle” when it comes to her dedication to Oakland students.

Please join me in voting for Jody London for District 1 school this election to ensure Oakland students continue to benefit from her unwavering commitment and leadership on our school board.

Casey Farmer is the campaign manager for Nancy Skinner for State Senate.
