Proposition 55 Passes: A Victory for California Students
This election season, GO Public Schools supported Proposition 55 (Prop. 55), the California Children’s Education and Health Care Protection Act, because we believe in the importance of investing in the educational experiences of all young people today in order to ensure that they thrive tomorrow.
We are proud to announce that voters chose yesterday to approve Prop. 55, a significant victory for California’s students and teachers. We’re excited to build on the positive outcomes that Prop. 55 will bring to the state’s public education system, including lowering class sizes to promote individualized attention in schools, hiring qualified and innovative new teachers to reverse our teacher shortage, affordable and accessible higher education opportunities, and increased access to health care for historically underserved communities.
Prop. 55 is a renewal of Proposition 30, a tax generating about $6 billion annually to fund K-12 and community college education that passed in 2012. Prop. 55 will maintain this tax on the wealthiest Californians and help fund public education in California, and ensures that funds go directly to school districts and classrooms in need.
Prop. 55 was also endorsed by hundreds of other education, civic service, and community-based organizations including the California Teachers Association, League of Women Voters of California, ACLU of Northern California, Education Trust West, Children Now, and Advancement Project California.
Thank you for joining us in voting YES on Prop. 55 and for doing justice to the next generation of creators, thinkers, and leaders by supporting their public education.
