Students to Start Benefiting from Measure G1 Funds
While there are many cuts in the 2017-2018 budget passed by the Oakland school board last week, one source of new funding for middle schools is Measure G1. District-run middle schools will receive approximately $1.3 million for art, music, and world language programs.
Per the Measure G1 Commission’s recommendation, the amount that district-run schools will receive for the upcoming school year reflect the following:
- Middle schools will receive funding based on the number of low-income, English learner, homeless, and foster youth they serve. The amount that schools are slated to receive is based on enrollment projections and may be adjusted once the school year begins to reflect actual student enrollment.
- For the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years, middle schools will receive half of the total amount that they are eligible to receive once the program is fully funded in the 2019-20 school year.
Click here for a full list of funds each district-run middle school will receive. For schools receiving funds, amounts range from $124,769 to $1,193. Two schools will not receive funds because they did not submit a plan.
School-based staff are projected to start receiving G1 salary increases in the 2018-19 school year once the full tax revenues have been collected and teacher contract negotiations have ended. Pay increases will happen annually for the life of the parcel tax.
Next Steps for Rolling Out Measure G1 Funds
To continue making progress on rolling out Measure G1, the G1 Commission will undertake the following steps:
- It will review the process that schools went through to apply for Measure G1 funds and seek further community input to improve the process.
- Meet with charter school leaders in August to discuss site plans for charter middle schools which wish to implement Measure G1 in 2017-18. The District notes that funds will not be distributed until spring/summer of 2018, so charter schools will have to use their own funds in advance of that distribution.
