Oakland is entering a critical moment in the efforts to resolve OUSD’s budget crisis, and we urge the Board and district leaders to exercise the leadership and discipline it will take to right the ship and truly address the roots of the current budget problems. The outcomes of the next couple weeks cannot be more instability and more mid-year cuts while tinkering around the edges of broken systems.
Welcome to GO’s School Board Watch for the meeting taking place Wednesday, November 8, 2017.
This week’s agenda includes the following key items:
The Oakland school board adopted a budget for the 2017-18 school year that includes over half a billion dollars in general funds, which pays for the Oakland Unified School District’s K-12 education expenses. This was a hard financial year for the District. Faced with a deficit, the District had to make significant cuts to balance its budget.
The District is facing serious financial challenges and will need to make tough decisions between now and June to meet their financial obligations and avoid triggering county or state intervention. At the onset of these budget issues, we identified issues related to the current school year and issues related to next year (2017-18). This update is focused on the current year issues.
